Day 2: Ripley

I attempted to make some sort of edible meal for the kids last night...can't say I succeeded. Not a lot to work with. But, we need whatever we can get in order to stay strong.

While I was in the kitchen, I realized I wasn't alone in there. One of the cafeteria workers showed up in the office back there, and I just about wet myself. I didn't have anything to protect myself with except some dull knives and a big soup pot, and frankly, I didn't want to get close enough to use one of those. Besides, the worker looked green. I figured there is always a chance I could still get whatever this is, and I've got Billy to think about and to protect. I lured the worker into the big walk-in freezer (I never knew there was one in here) and then darted out, slamming the door behind me and locking it. I could hear her banging around in there, but there's no way out. For once, being short and reasonably fast proved helpful. I never told the kids she was in there. She's probably dead by now from hypothermia. Even though she was already dead.

We decided that we have to get out of here. We have been collecting everything we can carry safely. Evidently, Eric has been "planning" for this event. All of those zombie and doomsday movies must have gotten into his head. Maybe they should have gotten into all of our heads.

I wonder how long it will take for the shock to wear off and for these kids to realize that everything they know, everyone they know, is over, dead. They seem to be handling themselves pretty well right now, though I can see some aren't too happy with being bossed around by Eric. I can't let them go anywhere alone, though. It's too dangerous. I fear that the isolation is going to work on their minds more than whatever has caused this...infestation.
